The 2060 season has come to an end in Omaha. In what could be described as a transitional year has been a positive year for Omaha in the Heartland. The most major change in 2060 is the amount of payroll that has been cut. For the first time since the 2037 season the Monarchs trimmed their payroll under 100 million and they only paid out $73,249,749 compared to last years payout of $107,702,819. One would think with that amount of cut in payroll the teams record would suffer. That is not what happened this year. Last season Omaha finished 72-90 and this season there was a 1 game improvement and finished 73-89. GM Spencer said we are thrilled as an organization how we have been able to become efficient with our spending and making sure we make every dollar count without hurting the team. We are positioned much better going forward to increase the aggressiveness of this organization. Although we are still in rebuild mode we have positioned ourselves to get creative in trades, jump into FA spending and other outside the box options as we have cleared the books. Don't look for anything overly aggressive but some short term investments could be on the horizon in Omaha.
There are several guys on the roster this year that are expiring and poised to enter into free agency. We are talking to some guys, but we will only bring them back if it makes sense to the team. GM Spencer said out of this group I would expect more of the guys to hit the open market than to be retained, but we are still talking. We have to make sure they are the right fit on what we are trying to do in Omaha. One thing we must do this offseason is improve our club defensively. We ranked near the bottom of the BBA in most defensive categories, and this puts a lot of pressure on our pitching staff. We want to develop and create and identity for this team and playing hard and playing good defensively are at the top of the list.
We had some great years from some guys this year including 23 year old Jorge Delgado who led the team in RBI's with 94 and batting average at .282. Some guys tend to struggle their second season known as the sophomore slump and he avoided that this season and had a great year, we expect him to continue to get better going forward. Old reliable Luis Mendoza had another strong season. Many experts predicted a down year this year and they was correct but it was not the level of decline that many experts had predicted. Mendoza lead the team this year with 22 home runs. We realize Mendoza might be considering retirement but he has a home in Omaha he has been great for this organization the last six seasons and a fan favorite. We are real excited about the season Oscar O'Halloran had for us this season. He was 10-7 with a 4.41 ERA. He was such a strong arm out of the bullpen for us this season and i think he could be in the mix next season to hit the rotation. The 24 year old will just contiue to get better for us.
We was also able to improve the minor league organization this season. We entered last offseason ranked 30th overall and we have climbed up to 24th overall so we are trending in the right direction there as well. We understand successful organizations have to be build from the bottom up and we want to continue to invest in these areas so we can aquire home grown talent. We will put a heavy focus on the draft this offseason as we will have a top 10 pick and we hope to hit that right to jumpstart the prospect depth.
GM Spencer said I would definitely call this season a success. We had to make a lot of tough decisions we moved a lot of popular players and thats never easy. But we believe people can see what is happening and the opportunities that are ahead and people are getting excited. We still have a long ways to go and we will continue to work hard but its refreshing to see the plan that is in place can actually be achieved through time. We cant wait to get started into the 2061 offseason.
