After rumors, Orlando Ordonez indeed does sign an extension with Omaha. (2054.8)

After rumors, Orlando Ordonez indeed does sign an extension with Omaha.

Just on the heels of the Andre Ly extension, chalk up another homegrown player staying home.

Omaha announced a 6 year $69,000,000 extension with Orlando Ordonez that begins in 2055 at the age of 35. Ordonez does hold an opt-out of the final year which will pay him $10,000,000 if he elects to not opt out at the age of 40. If Ordonez wins the Sawyer, he will get a $850,000 bonus and gets an additional $200,000 for any all-star teams he is elected to. He has found himself in 6 so far in his career.

Ordonez, was signed as an international free agent in 2036 for $7,400,000 out of Cuba, has had a storied career with the Cyclones that at this point looks like it will finish having worn just the one uniform.

Ordonez is the Cyclones all-time leader in many categories, including WAR, where he has a career 68.4 WAR. For his career in center field, he has a 102.9 ZR spread out over 2,188 career games in center field. Recently it was well documented that he had joined the 500/500 club, and he has added to that with 511 career home runs and 505 career steals.

Some are skeptical of his ability to remain in center field for the duration of this new contract, but worst case, he will make a heck of a corner outfielder if his range does begin to fall behind the expected output in center field.

After prior front office regimes would seemingly burn through players faster than Emilio Morales would burn through baseballs by hitting them into the cheap seats, Omaha has reversed the course on this.

In career games with the club, 6 of the top 10 are from the Niles era.

1.) Emilio Morales- 2,751 games played---Only team Morales played for.—Stadium named after him.
2.) James Monger- 2,710 games played---Only team Monger played for.—Now bench coach.
3.) Orlando Ordonez- 1,974 games played---Only team Ordonez has played for.—Still playing.
4.) Andre Ly---1,974 games played—Only team Ly has played for---Still playing.
6.) Jimmy Starks Jr---1,781 games played.—Played 35 games for Las Vegas.
9.) Wilson Estrada---1,432 games played---Only team Estrada has played for. Still playing.

#9 has you wondering…. Since Wilson Estrada is playing in the final year of his contract, you’d have to think he is next?

There's something to be said for keeping your own players whenever possible. And I think I've said this before, but in a salary cap league, I'm impressed.
