It seems like ages ago that Omaha paid $7,400,000 for the rights to Orlando Ordonez in 2036 as a young 17-year-old prospect fresh out of Cuba. Within months, Ordonez was named the #4 prospect in the BBA before hitting #2 in 2038, and debuting the following year at the age of 19.
Since then, Ordonez has accumulated 67.2 WAR and appeared in over 2,200 games for the franchise.
Last week, he joined only currently center fielder Felix Roman as the only center fielders to ever hit 500 home runs in their career. What is worth pointing out is that Ordonez also has 501 steals for his career, which places him among one of the few to accumulate 500 home runs and steal 500 bases in their career.
Ordonez also finds himself second among most batting statistics in Omaha history. Although he won’t reach the 738 all-time record held by Emilio Morales, he passed him in WAR last season and will without a doubt finish with the most WAR in Omaha history. Andre Ly is the only player within a chance of catching him(Ly has 56.8 compared to Ordonez at 67.2.). With both being 33 years old, assuming both finish their career in Omaha, it’s unlikely to happen.
Ordonez has a $19,000,000 guarantee for next season, however after that it appears to be up in the air and neither party has met to discuss contract negotiations according to Ordonez’s camp. If Omaha’s history is any indication, we figure a deal is likely to be done.
Ordonez is currently on pace this year to finish with 6.1 WAR, which would be the third most in his career. He had a Silk caliber season in 2045, where he belted 45 home runs while batting .305/.66/.605 and finished with 8.2 WAR. He finished third that season, but was not nominated to the all-star team despite finishing ranked 3rd in home runs and total bases, 5th in stolen bases, 2nd in runs scored, 1st in extra base hits, 2nd in WAR, and winning a Diamond Glove for his work in center field.
