Despite some off-season noise, James Monger having fantastic year.(48.7)

Members of the media were quick to criticize the Omaha front office last April after it was announced that James Monger had signed a 6-year contract extension with the organization worth $30,950,000. Monger, who was 34 at time, would be basically locked up through his age 40 season. Obviously 40 is about as far on the wrong side of 30 as most players get.

To make matters worse, Monger had just experienced consecutive seasons where his batting production dropped from the prior season. In 2047, his OPS+ dropped to 91 and his WAR was just over 2. Now, the club was handing him another $30 million?

Well, it’s worked out early on. Granted, Monger is not quite 40 since that was just a season ago, however he is currently riding a cool .294/.338/.526 triple slash with 16 home runs and an OPS+ of 128. His 2.8 WAR for the season already crossed his total from last year of 2.1 and his current pace of 4.3 WAR would be the most for his career since the 2037 season.

Not only is he doing fantastic with his bat, but his glove work in the field has continued to be excellent. He currently has a 2.1 ZR and 1.002 EFF rating. That’s a bit down from his 7.8 ZR and 1.037 EFF rating last season, but at age 35, James Monger is still relevant.

As a matter of a fact, he has a real chance to sit atop the Omaha record books for WAR if his production continues. He has been overshadowed much of his career, but he has accumulated 50.4 WAR thus far along with a triple slash of .281/.338/.493 to go along with 419 home runs and 1196 RBI. He also has 304 stolen bases.

His 419 home runs put him just 7 home runs behind the all-time leader for home runs by a second baseman and 51 RBI from sitting atop the list of RBI by a second baseman. Both records are currently held by Bryan Vogel. Monger sits in the top 7 for WAR all time among second baseman as well.

It’s odd to admit because it has been overlooked, but James Monger has been a very solid second baseman.
