James Monger likely ends his career where it began after 6 year extension.(47.05)

Fan favorite James Monger is likely going to end his career with the same franchise it began with, and has always been thanks to the recent announcement that he has agreed to a 6-year contract extension with Omaha that will pay him a total of $30,950,000 and go through the 2054 season.

This announcement also voids the vesting option on Monger’s contract for next season, which had required 120 games to be played in order to earn a guaranteed $13,000,000 in 2048. That vesting option now moves to the back of the contract, meaning those rules apply for the 2053 season in order for the 2054 contract year to be guaranteed at $4,500,000.

In prior years, Monger also had a $1,500,000 bonus if he accumulated 500 plate appearances, but it appears that will drop off after next year as his only bonuses now are all-star related and Sawyer Silk trophy related. If he makes the all-star game, as he has done twice in his career, he will earn an additional $120,000. A Sawyer award would earn him $700,000 in additional compensation.

Monger was the 2nd overall pick in the 2033 draft by Omaha and debuted just a year later at the age of 21. Since that time, he has appeared in at least 152 games every season, and accumulated a career WAR of 45.6. He also has 382 home runs, and a .283/340/.496 triple slash with a 113 OPS+.

In the field he has played 1,594 games at 2B, where he has a 23.1 ZR. Thanks to 374 games at Shortstop, where he had a -21.7 ZR, his career ZR stands at just 1.4.

Through his career, he has made career earnings of $124,830,000, with the new contract pushing that total over $165,000,000.

As he is currently 34 years old, this contract will take him through his age 41 season, likely signaling the end of his playing career. Monger currently ranks 2nd all time in games played in franchise history, only behind Emilio Morales.
