It seemed as if it was more of a when than an if when it came to Timo Dooley and the Omaha Cyclones agreeing on a contract extension. With Dooley spending his entire pro career since debuting at age 21 in 2041 in a Cyclones uniform, it would have been unfortunate to see him leave the state to suit up elsewhere.
Now, fans rest easy knowing they don’t have to worry about that.
Dooley and the Cyclones have agreed on a 6-year deal that will run through the 2051 season that will pay Timo a total of $81,400,000 guaranteed. Of course, few agreements come with some sort of option or opt out that allows a person to go back on their word. This contract is no exception. Usually however, the contract options are designed to help the club. Not this time as the team is all in with no ability to get out of the contract. Dooley however could make it a 5-year deal instead of a 6-year deal if he so chooses to. If he elected to do just that, he would forfeit the final year’s salary, the largest of the contract at $19,900,000. That means this would become a 5-year contract paying $61,500,000 or an average of $12,300,000 annually.
Other incentives included state that If Dooley makes the all-star game, he will earn an additional $160,000 and if he wins the Nebraska award, he will take home an additional $850,000 that season.
Last season Dooley shined with a Frick league leading 23 wins and a 3.08 ERA, to finish his third consecutive season with an ERA under 4. It was also his 3rd straight season with his innings pitched topping 200 for the season. In 2045, he tossed 248 innings, with a 1.01 WHIP. This season however, Dooley has slipped with a bad April and even worse July (where his ERA was 7.76 over 5 starts).
For his career, Dooley has an even 4.00 ERA, 81 career wins in 178 starts and a 20.3 WAR. Over those starts, he has thrown an average of 6 2/3 innings per start. He will turn 27 years old on Halloween (Oct 31). When this contract expires, Dooley will be either 31 or 32 years of age and likely among the career pitching leaderboards in Cyclone history.
Omaha extends Dooley through 2052.(46.10)
