When Jorge Lugo was acquired in mid-August last season it was his second trade in a matter of 3 weeks. Omaha thought they had potentially traded for a consistent shortstop, something the team has arguably never had during the entire 15-year Niles front office.
Instead, Lugo refused to negotiate with Omaha, playing his final 37 games of the season with the club before quickly packing up his locker and heading home. It was discouraging to say the least as Omaha sent away their current shortstop at the time, Roberto Beltran who wasn’t a big loss, however the other piece of the deal being Augusto Sanchez has the potential to be a mid-rotation starter.
Now with little options at the position in free agency, Russell Sharp looks to be the guy.
Sharp, at 27 years old, had just 72 career at bats prior to last season. Last season he got some looks while in Long Beach, and had another 17 at bats after being dealt to Omaha finishing with a 0.4 WAR in 161 total at bats for 2045, thanks mostly to his ability with his glove.
Sharp now will be asked to play the majority of the 162 game season, and easily double his career at bats this season as the everyday shortstop. What looked to be a minor deal last season, has now had much larger potential implications for the 2046 season in Omaha.
With Jorge Lugo departing, Russell Sharp expected at SS.(46.02)

If it makes you feel better, I’m really hoping Lugo is a long term solution in Portland.
