Omaha remains far apart on negotiations with several arb players.(45.04)

News coming out of Omaha indicates that while the club typically announces new deals during spring training or shortly after the season begins (look at Orlando Ordonez last season), there aren’t any pending imminent announcements as the club is said to be “far apart” with several players on compensation.

With no clear indication who the players are, our guesses would be outfielders Andre Ly & Jim Antolin.

Ly, acquired back in 2039, will reach 5 years of service in the upcoming weeks, making him eligible for a contract longer than 3 seasons. Ly is making $6,310,000 this season, and is projected at $8,400,000 next year. He was a 3.2 WAR player last year with a 116 wRC+. Ly also won his fourth Diamond Glove in a row last season. Despite his excellent skills at the plate against right handed pitching, Ly has basically been forced to sit against southpaws.

Antolin had a breakout debut season for Omaha in 2044 after being acquired from Montreal. He was just 2 stolen bases away from joining only Ramon Pagan, Aaron Haney, and Ettienne Lafitte as the only players to ever hit 51 home runs and steal 48+ bases in the same season. His 110 BB on the season also were a welcome site to Omaha fans who weren’t used to having players watch pitches. Antolin is making just $850,000 this season, with his arbitration estimate for next year(his final season) already at $7,000,000. Antolin could be one of the players who is demanding to be paid like he is currently playing rather than past seasons influencing his compensation.

You could also point at shortstop Roberto Beltran. Beltran only played for Omaha half of 2044, accumulating a 1.4 WR in just over 350 plate appearances thanks in large part to his excellent defensive ability. Beltran is making $4,500,000 this season and there could be arguments from the 24 year old about compensation on a long term deal.

Last, let’s not overlook starter Norio Hayashi. Hayashi is a very interesting case. Prior to last season Hayashi was used strictly in the bullpen. In the 2043 off-season, Hayashi developed a third pitch to his repertoire though, a cut fastball. Hayashi was used last season in the pen to start the year but transitioned to the rotation midway through. His 3.64 RA in 205 innings showcases that he deserves a spot in the rotation. He has followed up that with a 2.32 ERA this season early on. He is making $950,000 this year as a 26 year old and is expected to make roughly $2,000,000 in arbitration next year. Could Omaha be working toward a longer deal with Hayashi?

While there is complete uncertainty right now who Omaha is attempting to work a long term deal out with, the good news is that none of these players are free agents at the end of the year meaning if Omaha doesn’t agree to terms with them this season, there is still one more arbitration season to cross the T’s and dot the I’s.

Worth watching though.

Hayashi with back to back complete games. Better get him locked up quick before the asking price rises.
