Omaha avoids arbitration with outfielders Brett White and Andre Ly.(43.05)

It’s typically a difficult time in the off-season when a player and a club disagree on the value a player brings to the club and what the playoffs compensation should be moving forward. That is where arbitration comes in, and a third party decides who is more correct on value. Teams are wise at points to try to avoid this because of the negative morale hit that some players may feel is a team is penny-pinching them, despite what the truths may be.

Omaha has successfully avoided the drama with two of its outfielders agreeing to deals right at the deadline.

Andre Ly, who was granted super 2 status by 13 days despite Omaha sending him down in 2041, has agreed to a one-year extension that will pay him $3,100,000 this season. A hefty raise from the league minimum $500,000 he received last season. He will obviously be eligible for arbitration each of the next 3 seasons following the 2043 season.

Brett White, who was acquired from Jacksonville at the deadline seemed destined to be on his way to free agency coming to Omaha batting just .203/.268/.434 with a 74 OPS+ and an inflated $8,000,000 arbitration estimate. White showed up after the trade compiling a .300/.359/.675 line over 25 games in Omaha, essentially double the production he was having in Jacksonville as his OPS+ went from 74 to 154.

After Omaha decided that they would be offering White arbitration rather than letting him walk away for nothing, White and the Cyclones agreed to a 1-year deal that will pay White $7,810,000 this coming season.

The problem with playing the super 2 game is that you never know exactly where the cut off will be.

I really planned on him being a 1 and done, but the combination of him playing well enough and the current FA class and demands had me quickly decide to just give him another shot on a short term 1 year deal.
