Omaha accomplished what any team hopes to accomplish when the season starts when they clinched a spot in the postseason this past week. Omaha, who was 25-29 at the end of May, quickly heated up as the temperature got warmer and now are 92-67, having gone 67-38 since June 1st.
Since August 1st however, they have gone 36-17, for a winning percentage of 68%, which sits near the top of the league in that time frame. A solid September where they are 18-6, a 75% winning percentage, has the team surging at the right time as the playoffs are just around the corner.
“I think the fact that we play in the best most competitive division in baseball helps us because everybody is talking about Louisville and Yellow Springs, and nobody is mentioning the quiet run we have been on here. Hell, up until last week everyone was afraid of Chicago but Omaha wasn’t even being mentioned in the same sentence.” Said GM Justin Niles.
The surge in September has caused Omaha to climb the standings quickly and are actually only 1 ½ games back of Twin Cities, who were up by 5 games on September 8th.
“Our job is far from done. Just because we clinched a spot in the playoffs means nothing. We don’t hang banners at our field or add to our front office signature banners for wildcard playoff spots. We have accomplished a lot this season. We rebounded from an unfortunate year last season, showing it was a 1-year fluke. We signed our franchise cornerstone to a new contract that will ensure he finishes his career where it always has been, we have done a great job, but the job isn’t complete.” Niles said as he left the podium.
