Omaha makes one final move before the deadline(2040.11)

Post by niles08 » Wed Nov 20, 2019 10:41 am

Omaha made a bit of a big move by acquiring Justin Jackson, but weren’t done as moments later dropped the news that Lando Klomp, Rafael Gonzalez & Sef Beday would all need to pack their bags as they would be leaving the United States and joining the Vancouver Mounties.

Heading in return for the trio of players was starting pitcher Jose Arellano. Arellano, who is 23 years old and has just over 2 years of major league service is potentially eligible for arbitration this off-season but it’s just a possibility at this point.

First, let’s discuss the guys leaving Omaha. Lando Klomp, who had come over with Elliott Buckland from Louisville in May, pitched 20 games for Omaha with an ERA around 5. He does have an arbitration year remaining in 2041 and has a clean injury history.

Rafael Gonzalez quickly fell out of favor with the club this year after batting only .217/.266/.385 through 226 at-bats, a far cry from his .297/.365/.582 2039 season where he had 380 at-bats and slugged 26 home runs. Gonzalez is still only 24 years old and Vancouver apparently thinks there is still some magic with Gonzalez.

Sef Beday was also included in this deal. The 21-year-old defensive center fielder is likely a utility player rather than a full-time BBA starter, but stranger things have happened.

Moving back to Arellano, who came to Omaha in this deal. Arellano has struggled this year with Vancouver as he sported a 6.22 ERA and a 4.80 FIP after posting two back to back seasons of ERA’s and FIP much lower. While his 23-38 carer record doesn’t say much for him, Omaha apparently believes that it is fundamental and something that can be fixed.

Regardless, Omaha did pick up some additional years of team control as Klomp was entering his final arbitration year next season, while Arellano will be under team control another 4 seasons through 2044.

Beday sounds like a real crapshoot.

Thank you, I’m here all week...try the veal and be sure to tip your waitress.
