Jose Canales closed out number 300 for his career the other night in Long Beach, helping Omaha to a 4-3 win over the Surfers. Canales played it cool after the game, almost seeming to not realize he had reached the milestone but when asked about it he reminisced with the following:
“I remember it clearly. I was a rookie and the last one standing in the bullpen in an extra-inning game. Our staff was worn to a frazzle and was desperate for a pitcher. So they put me in. I faced four batters, rung up the victory and took the first step toward 300 saves."
The 29 year old Canales now appears to have his sight set on getting to 400 as he went on:
“I’d say I am far from done. Hell I am only 29 years old. This organization has given me the ability to go out there and perform and have stood by me so I am happy to have said that I contributed to at least 300 wins.” Said Canales.
He actually has contributed to 361 wins as During his career over 552 games and 573.1 innings, Canales has put together a 61-60 record and logged 533 strikeouts. As mentioned, So far, he has picked up 300 saves and has a career 3.47 ERA.
Since beginning his closing duties in 2033, Canales has finished in first for season saves 4 times, and had never fallen out of the top 5 prior to last season when he finished 7th with 37 saves. He is owed $7,500,000 next season before the team holds an option on him for 2042 worth the same.
