Omaha officially submitted its protected list to the commissioner of the BBA today, and while the list was not made public to the media, a leak has provided much of Nebraska with something to argue about. If these leaks are legitimate, of the 19 players listed on the protected list, Omaha failed to protect its closer for nearly the past decade.
No, Jose Canales is not included in the list of players given to the commissioner.
He is one of the only remaining members of the club who pitched in Indianapolis with the Grasshoppers before the club made the move to Omaha in 2033. Canales has led the league in saves 4 seasons since 2033, and is the clubs all-time leader with 285 saves. His 3.51 career ERA places him 10th all-time on the clubs leaderboard for players with over 500 innings pitched as does his career k/9 of 8.4.
The 28 year old is owed $7,500,000 each of the next 2 seasons with a $7,500,000 team option for 2042 or a $1,500,000 buyout.
Omaha apparently is not worried about one of the expansion clubs snagging their closer from them, and maybe they shouldn’t be after Canales posted a career-worst 5.05 ERA over 66 innings last season. Not only did his ERA jump, but so did his BB/9 and WHIP.
Omaha fails to protect Canales(40.1)
