As defense struggles, calls for Ordonez get louder from Hawk Nation.(39.18)

As reported, the Omaha Hawk defense may be truly what is bringing down the entire team. They have a defensive efficiency which ranks almost dead last in the Frick along with a -7.2 zone rating collectively as a team. Their 13 errors through 12 games are embarrassing for any level of play.

The pitching, despite ERA’s that are both over the 6.5 mark for starters and relievers, actually has a positive WAR, which is a good thing, but that doesn’t equal wins when players can’t seem to make a play defensively.

Who’s playing poorly? Well almot everyone as only 3 players have a positive ZR on the club, but who’s the worst? That would be Jimmy Starks Jr with a -2.3 ZR and a God awful .898 Eff rating in center field.

The next man in line is actually Emilio Morales who has never posted a negative ZR in any season in the BBA and actually won the Diamond Glove last season at the hot corner. Quite a turn of events as the calendar turned to 2039.

Either way, as Starks struggles, the club is facing louder and louder noise for the Hawks to make a move and call up Orlando Ordonez from AAA Lincoln. Ordonez is currently the clubs #1 prospect and many thought he would have at least gotten a look during the spring but that wasn’t the case as Bernardo Boullosa was the only non-roster invite.

Ordonez is currently batting .271/.308/.479 in Lincoln, but has been great early on in center field with a 0.9 ZR through 13 games. The 19 year old was recently featured as the 8th best prospect in the BBA on the annual top 100 prospects list.

But where would Ordonez play? Gustavo Herrera & Martin Marin are both on pace for 6.0+ WAR. Alonso Olvere, who has been the DH is on pace for 3.5, and even Jimmy Starks is on pace for 2.9 despite his poor defensive showing.

Now Marin is not going to continue at the current pace and hit 68 home runs this season, Herrera probably won’t hit 41 and have a batting average of .300. Starks may hit 27 and steal 68 bases as that is close to what he did last year but one of these are going to level out.

Hawk fans may have to wait for one of them to do so before they see any movement from the minors, however it has been announced by the club that Herrera would be taking over in center field and Starks would be shifting to right field for the upcoming series against Hawaii. Could this be a clue as to the things to come?

Most “experts” believe that Olvere will eventually give way to Marin as the everyday DH, and an outfield of Starks Jr, Ordonez, & Herrera is in the clubs future. Don’t forget about Bernardo Boullosa however. Boullosa has been playing 2nd base this season, but he is naturally a left fielder. Hell, let's not even discount Lorenzo Bueno from making a surprise appearance eventually.
