Just how bad is the Omaha bullpen?(38.54)

Post by niles08 » Fri Apr 19, 2019 1:23 pm

The Omaha bullpen has been historically bad this year as in the worst bullpen in Justin Niles’s 8 year oversight of the Omaha Hawks organization.

The team is currently 10 games under .500 and fading off into the sunset fast, but just how much of that is the bullpen’s fault?

You don’t have to look much past the 5.55 Bullpen ERA which ranks 15th in the Frick League. If you feel like looking deeper, you can look at the 8-17 record the bullpen has along with only 2 producing at levels that would be better than the average AAAA replacement player.

As many words that come to mind to describe this bullpen, Let’s just say, they have been bad.

Omaha’s starting pitching hasn’t fared much better as the 4th and 5th spots have been a bit of a carousel since the start of the season due to Manuel Orozco & Carson Stoller finding a home on the disabled list.

Bengt De Meza has done a nice job filling in as the 4th spot in the rotation with a 4.13 ERA over 61 innings and a 1.0 WAR over those 9 starts. With Orosco out much of next season already, De Meza is the likely candidate to stick in the rotation through next season.

As for next season, the club is currently projected to have a payroll of $114,000,000 which would leave them no room for acquisitions, however expect that number to come down to the $105,000,000 range so the club should be able to sign 1 or 2 decent relievers in free agency.

De Meza is quite the surprise.
