Projected Starter: Sergio MaldonadoThis is a series that I have stolen from the Jackrabbits, where we will evaluate each position leading into and during the early stages of Spring Training. Only players currently on the 40 man roster will be included in this series as prospects will be looked at in upcoming weeks. This is the second of eleven positions that will be posted. In this part, we will take a look at the first base position.
Backup: Tyler Moore
Trying to find a spot: None
Another position for the club that seems to be steady. Maldonado just signed a 3 year pact with the club, so all indications would be that he would be the starter on opening day at 1st base. Maldonado had a great year defensively last year, and has a solid bat. His slugging percentage & home run totals will be among the worst for 1st basemen in the BBA however.
Tyler Moore is an interesting backup. He should fair well against right handed pitching, but will struggle against lefties if he has opportunities against them. Moore spent most of last season in AAA Lincoln, where he hit 34 long balls but had a horrible .231 batting average.
