Hawks Catcher Spring Training Preview(38.17)

Post by niles08 » Fri Mar 15, 2019 11:56 am

This is a series that I have stolen from the Jackrabbits, where we will evaluate each position leading into and during the early stages of Spring Training. Only players currently on the 40 man roster will be included in this series as prospects will be looked at in upcoming weeks. This is the first of eleven positions that will be posted. In this part, we will take a look at the catcher position.

Projected Starter: Dan Clapper
Backup: Luis Miguel Carillo
Trying to find a spot: None

The catcher position seems to be pretty well penciled in for Omaha. Dan Clapper was acquired during the offseason from Montreal for Hank Brewer, and all indications are that Clapper is expected to start the season behind the plate for Omaha. Clapper may hit .260 and double digit home runs, but he may also hit .150 with 4 home runs and play average defense.

With no true idea of what to expect from Clapper behind the plate, Omaha should have a better backup than they currently do. Luis Miguel Carillo is an interesting backup for the club but not outstanding. He will make very little contact but when he does, has the power to hit the ball out of the park. Carillo is probably not much of step down from last season’s long time back up Bob Wagner, however the club knew what to expect from Hank Brewer throughout the season.
