Omaha has spent the better half of the past decade with team payroll each season between $70-80 million.
Now, for the first time in as long as anybody can remember, the club has the BBA highest paid player.
Emilio Morales is set to make $35,400,000 this season, which is $400,000 more than Mexico City’s catcher Hsin Mei.
Morales is officially in the first year of the 6 year $140,093,750 contract extension signed with the club last season.
His contract is one that decreases in value as the years go on.
His contract breaks down as
2038: $35,400,000
2039: $30,400,000
2040: $25,400,000
2041: $17,400,000
2042: $15,400,000
There are also incentives of $1,000,000 each season he has over 600 plate appearances. He has reached over 600 plate appearances each season since 2033. There is also an $850,000 for a Sawyer Silk Silver Slugger trophy and $170,000 for making the all-star team.
His 19.3 WAR over the past 3 seasons are matched by few, and his 187 home runs in those 3 seasons is matched by nobody in the BBA.
The club may be paying him some cash this season, but from a birds eye view, I would say he is worth the money.
