POLL--Closing Time in Omaha—Omaha extends Canales for 4 more seasons(38.2)

Post by niles08 » Fri Mar 08, 2019 11:14 am

Each time Jose Canales has approached the mound in his career, the familiar lyrics for “Closing Time” by Semisonic played throughout Hawks field, with many fans singing along excited to see Canales close things out and send the crowd happy with a victory.

That tradition will continue at least 5 more seasons in Omaha as Jose Canales has agreed to a contract extension.

Canales, agreed to a 4 year contract worth $29,000,000 with the Hawks organization on a week where many contracts were signed. Canales is 26 years old and this contract will get him through his aged 31 season.

Canales recently went to arbitration with the club to determine his salary in 2038 and came out with a victory. He has a salary in 2038 of $6,751,250. His new contract will pay him $6,500,000 next season along with a $1,000,000 increase for the remaining 3. The last year of the $7,500,000 in 2042 is a team option with a $1,500,000 buyout should the team decide to move on from the hard throwing right hander.

Canales has been a very good piece for Omaha, having a 3.04 ERA along with 215 career saves with his lowest being in 2035 where he recorded 34. His 215 career saves rank 2nd on the Omaha all time listing, and by the end of this season he should be atop the board all by himself as he only needs 25 to catch George Thrilkil for the coveted spot. Catching George THrilkil would also put Canales atop the top 50 in BBA history for saves in his career, and should occur at the ripe age of 27.

Canales has a long ways to go, but for comparisons sake, Jason Egan had only 175 saves after his age 27 season so Canales would be nearly 100 over his pace.

Let’s take a poll…How many saves will Jose Canales end his career with?

His K total took a hit last season. Less K than IP. Not stats a typical closer has.

He'll get however many saves you'll ride him out for. Depends on if last year is the start of a trend or not.
