INT. WESLEY CABOT'S HOME. DAY.
Theo enters an empty drawing room, his girlfriend, ANNIE MELTON (20s), trails just behind. Theo carries a brown baseball cap in his right hand. He does not look happy.
COLORADO SPRINGS 3:15 PM
ONE MONTH EARLIER
Theo stops and tosses the hat onto an armchair. He turns to Annie.
THEO
What the hell was that?Annie closes the door behind her.
ANNIE
That, is a birthday party, which I'm
pretty sure will be going for a while. THEO
What is that?Theo points to the ballcap.
THEO (CONT'D)
What is that? What's he up to? ANNIE
Your dad's birthday present. A friggin
baseball team. Maybe he thought you'd
like it? THEO
In flyover country? Sure, I'm totally
stoked to hang out with some sad sack,
rust belt proles.
(takes a beat)
It's a test of some kind, I'm sure of
it. There's an angle, there always is. ANNIE
I don't know, when he announced it, it
sounded like his angle was that he
wanted you to be happy. THEO
Yeah, we've been getting a good dose of
Wes Cabot's public face. Ole Wes, the
simple family man. Too many people on
the guest list that he doesn't know.
Can't let that mask slip.Theo pauses, running through his father's routines and subroutines, searching for larger meaning. Annie comes up behind him, putting a hand on his shoulder.
ANNIE
Why does coming back here send you over
the edge? Every. Friggin. Time. Nobody
can do a thing around you without
tripping some kind of alarm. THEO
Think about it. I've been based in New
York for six years now. He knows this,
but he finds this pretext to drag me to
the middle of – ANNIE
The country... THEO
To the middle of the country, in an
industry I'm not familiar with. The
question is what does he get out of it?Theo's demeanor turns on a dime. He smirks.
THEO (CONT'D)
There it is. That's the test. How do I
adapt? How do I learn the business and
make this the most profitable club in
the Brewster? ANNIE
You mean most successful. THEO
Sure, yeah.EXT. HOUSE OF STEVEN FLANNERY. DAY.
STEVEN FLANNERY (late 30s) reclines on an outdoor lounge chair. He wears a bathing suit, sunglasses, and a good deal of suntan oil. Reggae music plays on a stereo in the background.
KEY BISCAYNE 11:30 AM
Steven appears content, without a care in the world. A woman in a bikini passes by his chair, but Steven doesn't appear to take notice. His phone, sitting on a small table next to the chair, rings. It rings three times before he sits up and answers.
STEVEN
Hey, man, what's happening?
(pause)
My agent hasn't filed the paperwork
yet, but yeah, I'm calling it a career.
(pause)
Dude, I cannot tell you how retired I
am feeling right now. I don't even
want to think about that.
(pause)
Look man, maybe I'll drop by when you
all come down in the spring. Maybe.
(pause)
Yeah, you too.Steven hangs up and puts the phone down on the table. He resumes his position of ultimate relaxation.
He mutters to himself:
STEVEN (CONT'D)
Have I thought about coaching … Heh.(CONTINUED)
