A little longer for Monger in Omaha.(46.01)

Post by niles08 » Fri Feb 12, 2021 12:51 pm

On November 06th, 2045, Omaha fans were afraid to pick up a newspaper or watch the local newscast as many knew that with the news of longtime Omaha infielder James Monger deciding to exercise his opt-out, change was likely coming.

Monger had 6,845 career at bats, all in an Omaha uniform. Having been drafted by the club 2nd overall in 2033, and debuting in 2034, James Monger was just as much an Omaha legend as Emilio Morales or any other member of the club who had spent significant time in the city.

Monger has stamped his name on many of the single season and career leaderboards, while consistently being the leader the club has needed. However, with fellow first round pick Gehrig Jelinowicz knocking on the door in AAA, it appeared that Monger’s Omaha career was likely over.

With all that in mind, it could be considered shocking that the club announced a 3-year deal with Monger just 4 days later. Yes, James Monger will now remain in Omaha through the 2048 season assuming his option vests at $13,000,000 for that final 2048 season. Monger will be just shy of 36 years old at that time.

“We had a few priorities this off-season after our early exit by a fellow Heartland division team, however as soon as we talked with James, he became the priority. He brings a lot to our clubhouse and to our fans. We wanted to make sure that we take care of him off the field, knowing he will take care of us on the field. I mean he has been here 12 seasons with the major league club. It wouldn’t feel right to see him suit up for somebody else.” Said Omaha GM Justin Niles

There is no word what the extension means for Jelinowicz who appears ready to contribute at the BBA level after posting a 117 OPS+ in AAA and a combined 4.1 WAR split between AA and AAA last season at the age of 20.

....it means Jelinowicz needs to wait another season before he can have fungus on his shower shoes... 😄
