Omaha made a somewhat under the radar move last week when they traded third baseman Rafael Gutierrez, Marvin Atkinson and minor league outfielder Lorenzo Bueno all to Louisville acquiring starting pitchers Lando Klomp and Elliot Buckland.
The move was clearly done to help a starting rotation that had an ERA in the mid 6’s through the first week of May. While it hasn’t been immediately noticeable, the team is 13-5 since that trade and they have lowered their starting pitching ERA to 5.35 on the season.
However, the team still seems unsure of itself as they have announced that they will shift to a 4 man rotation, shifting Augusto Cardenas to the bullpen.
Cardenas got his start in the BBA and had his most dominating years from the pen, and with an ERA over 5 currently, the club is hopeful that Cardenas to duplicate that past success.
Cardenas had a 3 year stretch in California as a reliever, with an ERA of 1.07 in 2036, 2.04 in 2037, and 2.68 in 2038 along with a combined 8.9 WAR over those 3 seasons from the pen. Since coming to Omaha, Cardenas has been used in the rotation and in the pen, but was still been more successful in the pen last season. This year has been used exclusively as a starter, appearing in 11 games but it appears his time in the rotation is over.
After the 2040 season, the rotation looks like it will have even more question marks as Buckland is set to be a free agent and word is that he is currently set on testing out free agency. Klomp is set to be in his final arbitration season next year. The club does have Timo Dooley & Rafael Flores in the minors and it appears Dooley may be capable of being ready next season.
Despite trades, Omaha still unsure of rotation as they announce another change(40.7)

I like the trade for Omaha.
I have this weird feeling that Gutierrez is going to be a bust.
