64.31 Blazers Sign Promising Relief Prospect

Post by Bob Breum » Sun Sep 14, 2025 10:33 pm

After a hotly contested bidding war, Montreal signed 23-year-old southpaw Jack Kunkel to a six-year, $19.5 million major league contract with the first four years guaranteed (4.5/3.75/3.0/2.75).

Kunkel was selected out of high school by Long Beach in the eighth round of the 2057 amateur draft. He became a free agent after last season and signed a minor league contract with a major league option with Mexico City but opted for free agency after the first month of the season.

Last season he split time between Single-A and AA. He made 18 appearances in Single-A, going 4-2 with a 2.30 ERA (202 ERA+). In nine appearances in AA, he went 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA (121 ERA+). This season, he has made five appearances in AA, going 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA (148 ERA+).

Kunkel possesses an elite triple-digit fastball, a knee-buckling curveball, and an adequate sinker. His pitches feature plus-plus movement, but he struggles with his control. Baserunners find it virtually impossible to run on him.

I'm just not convinced that control will play in the BBA. Not even sure it would in the GBC.

Career WHIP of 2.0 in AA. This one's a real risk taking move for you guys. will be curious to see how it works out.

He’s only 23. The dev lab is in his future.

Not sure he's worth a penny even if he fully develops. He needs some bumps, but I cannot figure out why the game rates him so highly. I had A MiLC offer out on him, but don't see how you came across this valuation. You should be able to get guys of this caliber for $500k.

I admit, I did not expect this level of pushback. But let's investigate your hypothesis. How scarce is Kunkel's talent? Here is a list of all the BBA players with the same or better ratings (Stuff of 6, HRA of 8, PBABIP of 6, control of 3, #pitches at least 3, stamina below 4:

PitcherAgeTOVRSTUCONPBABIPHRRFBPITVELOSTM Salary TotalTerm
Gheorghe Sollomovici22L801166811396-983 $500K $500K1
Dave Furman24R701166810494-962 $500K $500K1
Enrique Villarreal26L65777811398-1002 $2,160K $2,160K1
José Torres24L657778-595-973 $1,420K $1,420K1
Claudio Torres22L55856811396-982 $500K $500K1
Bob Butler31R5566687393-951 $1,880K $5,640K3
Tom Brothers24L4564688595-973 $500K $500K1
Jack Kunkel23L40636811398-1001 $4,500K $19,500K6
Sollomovici, Furman, Torres, and Brothers are not yet arbitration eligible and have never been exposed to free agency.
Villarreal is one year into arbitration and is estimated to receive $4.642 million next season.
Torres is expected to receive $2.884 million in arbitration next season.
Butler signed a three-year contract for $1.88 million per season.

None of these guys are perfect comps for Kunkel.

I knew when I made the offer that it was an overpay. That's how you sign free agents. We were not the only team in pursuit of his services. My bid was designed to be more attractive than the existing bid that he had. It's a declining salary contract, $4.5/3.75/3.0/2.75, with two team options of $2.75. My front office projects him at $9.5 in arbitration in 2070 if the contract goes all six years. With the six year deal, we lock in an affordable annual salary.

Of course, if he fails as a prospect, we've lost our $14 million investment. I've lost more than that on a failed IAFA. Is it a risk? Absolutely. Is it as risky as throwing $14 million at an IAFA? Certainly not.

It's no secret that we highly value HRA. Kunkel's HRA of 8/9 is incredibly alluring. He's a lefty. That's kinda hot. He throws 100 mph but keeps the ball in the park? That's sorcery.

Developing control from 3 to 4 is rated as medium difficulty in the development lab. I think he'll get there. Would we prefer control of 5 or better? Sure, but for a low stamina reliever with electric stuff, I don't think that is crucial.

We all have different lenses through which we evaluate players. I may be wearing rose-colored glasses but I am smitten with Jack. I think he'll be a long term asset for us.

If you got he money, spend it. Dont let the owner take it unless you're below 40 mil in your Boner funds.

The difference between gambling on an IFA and this guy is Kunkel eats up valuable cap space. If you've got cap room, sure, why not. But I don't think he is at the level of the guys you mentioned except Brothers. Hope he works out for you.

I'm pursuing all avenues to build up our farm system. We have the cap space.

I offered 500k for like 3 years. I probably had a 4/5 th year buyout that would act like a signing bonus. With his 3 options, there would be no guarantee he'd be on the BBA roster and he'd only make $82.5k in actual money/cap space unless he made the team.

I don' get how he is a 60 either. I personally don't like his 1 stamina/3 control combo. He's gonna come in and throw 10-15 pitches, which may only be to 2-3 batters and start to lose his ratings. I have no doubt he will still limit HR. But his stuff, babip and control will become super weak after a few batters.

Not killing the signing. I think it's fun that we all value players differently. I notice this a lot with Montreal. I don't get the love for Kunkel, Marzuq, Marinus, and Hernandez. But Montreal has a better record than us. So I don't think that "I'm right" and "they are wrong". There are just more than one way to skin a cat.

It's absolutely a risk as has been discussed. Full disclosure I did have an offer in as well. So I get the appeal. However, I am dubious about his ability to get to be a finished product. The game just is brutal to players with that level of control. He'll need to bump to be successful. I don't think it's in the cards but Montreal does.

It sure will be fun to see who ends up right.
