61.20 Montreal Acquires Second Baseman in Trade with Rocky Mountain

Montreal introduced their new second baseman today, 27-year-old Paul Mallett. He was acquired in a trade with Rocky Mountain in exchange for a pair of prospects. Originally selected in the second round of the 2055 amateur draft, Mallett is in his third BBA season. He has struggled this season, hitting .204/.283/.389 (51 OPS+), but remains an elite defender at the keystone. He won the Yogi Zimmer Diamond Glove last season.
Paul Mallett
A right-handed batter, Mallett has a good eye at the plate, but is otherwise below average as a hitter. Last season, he accrued 1.4 WAR in 149 starts, hitting .229/.286/.366. He has excellent base-running instincts, making the best of his average speed. Scouts take a dim view of his work ethic.
He is earning $850,000 this season and is expected to earn around $1,725,000 in arbitration next season. He has two option years remaining. Rocky Mountain is retaining 50% of his remaining 2061 salary.
Rocky Mountain will receive starting pitcher Jake Beers and center fielder Francisco Rios.
Beers, 21, is a fireballing righty who struggles mightily to locate his pitches. His fastball sits between 99 and 101 mph, and he supplements that with a decent slider and a merely adequate curveball and changeup. Originally selected in the third round of the 2057 amateur draft by Vancouver, he went to San Fernando in the Jeffery Smith trade and then to Montreal in the Qutuz Mahdi deal. Like the bad boy that girls think they can change, clubs can't resist the allure of his overpowering fastball. This season in Single-A, Beers is 7-8 in 21 starts with a 3.16 ERA (124 ERA+) and 3.5 walks per nine.
Jake Beers
Rios, 19, is enjoying a breakout season in his fourth go-round at rookie ball, hitting .250/.333/500 (135 OPS+) in 63 plate appearances. Originally selected in the third round of the 2058 amateur draft, the skinny 6'4" center fielder is growing into his modest power but has yet to master his hit tool. He has plus-plus range and a solid arm and can play all three outfield positions well.
Francisco Ríos
Neither prospect appeared in the Blazers' 2016 Prospect Handbook, which ranks the organization's top 30 prospects.
