58.38 Blazers Call Up Five Players as Rosters Expand

Post by Bob Breum » Sat Mar 30, 2024 1:55 am

The AAA New Jersey Devils are about to host a playoff series, but they'll have to make do without many of their best players. Montreal purchased the contracts of 1B Dan Wilkinson, DH Gene Meade, CL Joshua Blenkhorn, RP Sergej Gijsberts, and RP Don Starr today, all but one of whom had made previous appearances with the Blazers this season.

Dan 'Tangles' Wilkinson

Former first round pick Dan Wilkinson, only 20 years old, hit .200/.263/.457 in 38 plate appearances for the Blazers back in June. He hit .330/.370/.571 for New Jersey this season, with 20 doubles and 22 home runs. He is a right-handed first baseman who is equally comfortable facing pitchers of either hand. He is ranked as the Blazer's number two prospect, and is considered the heir apparent when Lineu Aldo retires after next season. He is expected to serve as a pinch hitter off the bench and as a late inning defensive substitute at first base.

Gene Meade

Left-handed designated hitter Gene Meade, 37 years old, made a brief appearance for the Blazers in June. It did not go well, as he managed only four hits in 34 plate appearances and struck out eleven times. He dominated AAA pitching, though, to a tune of .353/.397/.544 with thirteen doubles and eleven home runs in 274 plate appearances. His years of playing the field are behind him. His role will be pinch hitting and/or substituting in as the designated hitter against a right-handed relief pitcher.

Joshua Blenkhorn

Likely to see the most time on the field for the defending Johnson League champions is closer Joshua Blenkhorn, who pitched to a 2.66 ERA over twenty innings before becoming the odd man out after a flurry of trades in mid-June brought in relief pitchers who were out of options. Blenkhorn closed out games for the Devils, with 18 saves in 19 opportunities, a 1.59 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. He'll likely be used primarily as a middle reliever.

Also joining the Blazers staff are relief pitchers Sergej Gijsberts and Don Starr. Gijsberts threw eighteen innings for the Blazers before getting sent down along with Blenkhorn, recording a 3.93 ERA and 1.15 WHIP. Starr came over in trade from Louisville; he has pitched 66 innings for New Jersey this season, with a 2.44 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP.
