58.21 Negrete Throws a "Maddux," Blazers Walk Off 1-0

Post by Bob Breum » Thu Feb 29, 2024 1:13 pm

MLB Hall of Famer Greg Maddux was famously economical with his pitch counts, pitching to contact and deep into games. In 2012, writer Jason Lukehart coined the term “Maddux” for the rare feat of pitching a complete shutout in fewer than 100 pitches. Its namesake threw 13 games that qualified during his career. Image

On Wednesday at Ubisoft Field, Ricardo Negrete thew a Maddux for the Blazers, finishing the 1-0 contest in only 87 pitches, allowing two hits, no walks, and striking out two. The game was still scoreless entering the bottom of the ninth inning.

With right-handed reliever Eric Buckson on the mound for the Las Vegas Hustlers, Blazers first baseman Lineu Aldo flew out to left field to lead off the inning. With right-handed catcher Juan Villa due up, Montreal manager Ernesto Zamora sent out António López to hit from the left side. He doubled into the right field gap. James 'Jimmie Jack' Belinda followed with a fielder’s choice to the right side that advanced the speedy Lopez to third base with two outs.

Hustlers manager Henry Rectenberg called for the next hitter, slugger Pedro Huerta, to be put on, and then he summoned Adam Bristcoe from the bullpen to face the left-handed John Oliver. With runners at the corners, Huerta advanced to second on defensive indifference on the first pitch to Oliver, which he took for a called strike. Unfortunately for the Hustlers, Bristcoe air-mailed his next offering to the backstop, scoring Lopez for a Blazers walk-off victory.

On the season Negrete is 3-3 with a league-leading 2.15 ERA.

Thanks to Bob's prodding, I can now say that Negrete's is the only Maddux recorded this year, so far. There have been a few other complete games under 100 pitches: (including Bikini's 2-pitch reliever. :) )

Thank you for doing this. I believe that the definition of a Maddux is a CG shutout under 100 pitches. With the exception of Garcia's outing, I think that all of these qualify.
