58.11 Lightning Strikes Twice for Steeneveld

Post by Bob Breum » Wed Jan 31, 2024 1:18 am

Benno Steeneveld did not see it coming. Not once. Certainly not twice. To quote Yogi Berra, “It’s déjà vu all over again” for Steeneveld, a left-handed pitcher.

The 31-year-old veteran southpaw has been around the block a few times. Originally drafted in the 15th round by the Libyan Generals in 2044, he made his GBC debut three years later with the Tripoli Piranhas. Six years later, he signed a BBA deal with San Fernando. After his release three years later, he inked a minor league deal with Montreal and played in the AAA All-Star game during the 2056 season. He had a good season at AAA New Jersey, and Montreal brought him back as a depth piece for 2057.

That’s when it happened the first time. Before the 2057 season got underway, he was selected in the Rule 5 draft by Bikini née Seattle. He made 26 starts for them with a 4.35 ERA (103 ERA+), going 7-9. Then, almost as abruptly as his Bikini days began, they ended, and he was returned to Montreal just before rosters expanded.

As we approach the 2058 season, Steeneveld had settled back in New Jersey, where his old landlord was delighted to welcome his return. He had just finished unpacking when it happened – for the second time. He was selected in the Rule 5 draft again, this time by Des Moines. Let’s hope, for Benno’s sake, that he enjoys a long and successful run in Des Moines.

He’s that special kind of mediocre lefty who ends up having a 10 year career in MLB. You’re never pleased he’s the guy starting that night but it could be a lot worse too.

He was solid enough, but yeah... other options.
