58.09 Rule 5 Draft Nets Pitching Prospect

Montreal had five players on the big board in their “war room” for the Rule 5 draft. Most of them went off the board before the draft even started, as teams added them to their 40-man rosters in the last minutes before the deadline.

They did succeed in drafting one player, however. Left-handed pitcher Nolan Miller will be joining the big league staff for the 2058 season. He’s 23-years-old, a former 2nd-round pick of Atlantic City in the 2051 draft when he was only 16. Since then, he’s worked his way up to the Long Island Legion, Atlantic City’s A-ball team, working as a starting pitcher at every level.

It’s a big leap from A to the BBA. It’s expected that the team will use him as a left-handed specialist and mop-up guy out of the pen. Miller has four decent pitches, with an especially promising cut fastball that could help him against right-handed batters.

Montreal recognizes that its farm system needs upgraded, and this is one more way to add prospects. Miller is well known for his work ethic, and the team hopes that their big league coaching staff can help the youngster develop into a productive member of the staff.

It's easier to keep a pitcher than a hitter, I think. You can set them to mop up duty and allow them to accumulate innings in low leverage situations.
