Monty Brewster's Montré-Booster: Cash-On

Monty Brewster’s Montré-Booster: Cash-On

Of all the interesting players in the BBA, Carlton Casson might have a claim to being the weirdest.

Casson might be the best two-way player in the MBBA -the last three years he’s contributed 4.6 wins in roughly 930 ABs as the Blazers’ DH against right-handed pitching, including this year a stomping .289/.345/.538 line with 24 homers in 409 AB. He’s also amassed 700+ innings and 211 saves as a lefty reliever in his career with a 3.04 ERA, including a 2.64 ERA and 1 save in his 18 appearances out of the pen this year.

Casson was a first round pick way back in 2042, and he confused many in the minors by winning hitting awards on his way to the bigs (his final season in New Jersey was worth 3.2 wins). However, on appearance in Montreal, he turned to the mound, and only managed 10 big-league at bats until he turned 29. Since then, star closer has become star slugger, and he has found a way to contribute from the mound as well, on his way to producing about 22.7 WAR to the franchise.

All that has come at a cost though. Following his 2044, 2045, 2046 and 2047 All-Star appearances, arbitration handed him salaries of $5 mil, $6 mil, and finally $10 mil. Following that, a bumper five year deal at …. $10mil per year. With that finally ending, the Blazers faced up to the fact they might not have the war-chest to keep the well-proven A-ruban around.

That’s Casson’s agent, Bert Incorrigible*, ringing now:

“He wants $1 million per”
“What?”
“You heard me, literally decimate his salary”
“But”

In the end, just for decency purposes, the playoff-bound Blazers threw Casson £3.6million over two years. Commentators were keen to point out that Bert Incorrigible’s well respected AI bot, OOT.gPt, might not be quite as good at valuing two-way players as it thinks it is.

Executive Coach Stan H. Stansman stated there is no truth to the rumours that Max Birstall will be installed as backup catcher and Toby Bundy as middle infielder in an attempt to repeat the trick.

He is the first real two way player we’ve had, I think.

That amount of money buys a lot of poutine.
