Monty Brewster’s Montré-Booster: RHB
Executif Coach Stan H. Stansman faced a quandary – with no money, how would he sign two major-league level bats for a combined $4 million cap room. How would the Blazers begin to replace the production of $12 million man Bret Powers and grizzled vet Tommy Cochran?
As luck would have it, the two of them produced a combined -0.9 wins above replacement, which meant that all the beleaguered businessman needed to do was find two players that were readily available! And who was more readily available than a 35-year old “defence and speed”* guy who managed to hit .235 in the GBC like Ricardo Ruiz, or a shadow-of-his-former-knee Nam-Cheol U?
However, extremely excitingly, an answer might have presented itself in the Rule V draft – ex-River Monster Ted “Long Ball” Benson! Ted was the 3rd pick overall back in 2049, and has progressed through the organisation at a reasonable speed while people got considerably less excited about him. That said, he grabbed himself the platinum stick in LF last year in AAA and hit a pleasingly odd-looking .266/.326/.500. That caught GM Dog Action’s eye and the Blazers swooped for the power bat. According to Action’s projections, “there’s a very good chance he could be
the perfect replacement for Tommy Cochran, in that he too might hit .199/.249/.414 and cost us a playoff spot”.
Ted Benson, readily available, but with nickname
*RAMJACK Pharmaceuticals for U has just the solutions to help you sustain your defensive skills as you age, and yes, that answer is speed
