Monty Brewster’s Montré-Booster: Recriminations

And so the season ends for the Blazers, finishing 8th in the Johnson. In the end, they were one win short. While rational people might have suggested losing five games to the Robins was the problem, Montreal senior management quite rightly tried to find departing free agents to blame. Bret Powers, good riddance!

Special praise, then goes to retiring 1B/Slugger Tommy Cochran , who managed to cost the Blazers almost a win below replacement himself. Cochran only got in 66 games, but was still able to contribute to (insert opponents here)’s triumph by crunching a massive .199. In his designated platoon bat role, Tommy actually saw out his career okay – hitting .791 with 11 homers in 141 at-bats! Luckily for everyone else, renowned manager Bill Inkster* managed to leave him in for 50 Abs against RHP, where he combined for an OPS of .448 and confused the litany of left-handed bats that the Blazers’ had brought in to avoid exactly this circumstance.

So likely ends Tommy’s career, which has taken in 10 franchises, seen him hit 309 homers and drive in almost 1000, and included a couple of years in El Paso where he summoned some gaudy numbers (finishing top 5, 4th, in Homers in 2045, with 45, which sounds like a understandable typographical error).

It’d be much more satisfying to blame SP Boris Milatovic, a whiny good-for-nothing who went 6-9 with a 6.48 ERA in 2054 having put up a 3.59 number in 2053. That said, his FIP was actually better this year. So it’s kinda hard to blame him for being disliked by the gods, and kinda hard to blame the gods for disliking him. “He’s not afraid to speak his mind”, said Fortuna, god of chance, “But also be a jerk”.

Guess Cochran really liked El Paso, too bad he didn't stay long.
