51.04 Blazers Weekly: April 1st - April 7th

It's that time of year again, as it's opening day in the BBA. The Blazers start the season with a quick 2-game set at UBISoft Field with Rockford before playing 3 of 4 at home against Mexico City.

Blazers Trounce Pikemen, 10-2

It was cold 44 degrees outside UBISoft Field but inside the Montreal Blazers were on fire. The hometown Blazers dumped the Rockville Pikemen, 10-2, at Ubisoft Field. Ulvi Basgil spearheaded the win. He was 2 for 2 with a double and 3 walks, while scoring 3 runs. Eduardo González would chip in by hitting his 1st home run of the season, this one a 2 run shot in the 7th inning.

The Blazers picked up the win with a combination of good hitting and good pitching. "It was a solid team effort," said Basgil after the game.

24-year-old Cheslav Evgrafov got the opening day start and didn't disappoint. He pitched 8.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 9 hits across 99 pitches thrown. He'd also accumulate 4 strikeouts on the way to the 1-0 record. Luis González would pitch a hitless 1/3 of a inning to close out the game.

On the opposing side, Jafar Haamid was on the mound for Rockford and pitched 6.0 innings while allowing 7 runs total, with 5 of those being earned with 6 walks and 7 strikeouts to pick up the loss.

Pikemen Top Blazers, 5-1, Behind bin Sahir
Nasir al Din bin Sahir was locked and loaded, helping the Rockville Pikemen beat the Montreal Blazers, 5-1. Montreal falls to 1-1.

bin Sahir, who was born in Alexandria, Egypt, threw 112 pitches over 8.1 innings, while allowing 1 run. "If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said bin Sahir.

The Montreal Blazers would get on the scoreboard first with their lone run of the game coming in the bottom of the 3rd inning. After a single to lead off the inning by José Méndez & a sacrifice bunt by Carlton Casson, Gehrig Jelinowicz would ground out to but it'd be enough to score Méndez

Don Jaramillo was on the mound for the Montreal Blazers and picked up the loss. He'd pitch 6.0 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.

Aztecs Top Blazers, 3-0, Behind Mendoza
Mexico City and Montreal duked it out and the Aztecs came out victorious.

The Mexico City Aztecs picked up a win at Ubisoft Field, knocking off the Montreal Blazers, 3-0. On the mound for Mexico City was left-hander Mauro Mendoza, who played a pivotal role in the win. The win puts Mexico City at 1-2.

Mendoza, who dominated for Mexico City, earned the victory to move to 1-0. He was in control the whole game, scattering 1 hit over 7.1 innings, while striking out 5. Montreal batters could never bunch up enough hits to produce a rally. "If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said Mexico City manager Emílio Rodríguez.

The Montreal Blazers could only must 2 hits throughout the game, one by Ulvi Basgil and the other by José Méndez.

Hopkins Lifts Aztecs to 6-2 Triumph
John Hopkins was a major factor in the 6-2 Mexico City win over Montreal. The Aztecs right fielder went 2 for 2 with a home run and 3 walks, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Carlos Olivas, the winner, goes to 1-0. He allowed 2 runs on 7 hits, with no walks and 6 strikeouts over 7 innings. Manuel Cruz locked down his 2nd save.

With Mexico City leading 1-0 in the top of the second, Hopkins hit a fastball from Boris Milatovic for a 2-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Aztecs ahead, 3-0. Hopkins called the win "a lesson in teamwork." The defeat makes Montreal 1-3.

Montreal would score both runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, When Ulvi Basgil would hit a 2 run shot, his 1st of the season. Boris Milatovic picked up the loss for the Blazers, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing 5 runs on 4 hits with 4 walks and 3 strikeouts while also allowing 2 home runs.

Aztecs Lose to Blazers, 7-5
Montreal pinch hitter Peter Crocker had 4 ribbies while helping his team defeat the Mexico City Aztecs, 7-5. Montreal reliever Bill O'Connor picked up the win, upping his record to 1-0. Dave Corfield was saddled with the loss. The win has Montreal at 2-3.

Crocker had a timely hit for Montreal in the bottom of the seventh. With Mexico City trailing 5-3, he turned a 2-0 cutter into a grand slam home run. It was his 1st home run of the season, making it 7-5, Montreal. "Nice to see our side come away with the win," Crocker said after the game.
