Late August Surge Pushes Blazers Back to Top
.....
.....
It took an 8-3 end to August for the Blazers to barely break .500 and finish with a 15-13 record. Due to the rest of the division (except for CCJ) finishing below .500 for August it was enough to push Montreal back to the top spot in the Atlantic Division, a full three games ahead of Rockville heading to September. The Blazers enter the final month of the season ranked in the top three in the Johnson League in most major pitching categories despite the fact that the starters have been less than stellar lately. One guy who has been great all year is Blazers' Pitcher of the Month for August, reliever In-sung Yi. Yi pitched 14 innings in the month and finished with a 1.93 ERA and a 21/5 K/BB ratio. A starter for his entire career, Yi was asked to move to the bullpen this season and it has paid off as Montreal sports one of the best group of relievers in the entire BBA. "When we needed a fifth starter we had to resist the urge to put him back in the rotation," confessed Montreal GM Herb DeSpain. "He was pitching too well in the pen and we didn't want to mess that up so we've been trying to get by." Rookie Flynn Lewis has also pitched well posting a 2.45 ERA in 14.2 August innings. Starters Dani Garcia and Juan Ruiz combined for a 7-2 record in August.
The performance at the plate has been up and down all season for this Montreal club. It was up a tick in August as OF Manoell Whanon once again led the way. The July Blazers' Hitter of the Month managed to repeat with a slash line of .356/.417/.625 while scoring 22 runs, knocking in 19, and stealing 11 bases. He wasn't alone as catcher Joe Bradshaw attempts to prove he is worth the six year, $83 million extension he signed back in June. Bradshaw hit .337 with a team best 23 RBI.
