..... Montreal Holds On To Top Spot for All of May!! .....
.....
The Montreal Blazers have held on to the Atlantic Division lead after two full months of play thanks to back to back 17-10 months pushing them to a 34-20 record and a three and a half game lead over the Charm City Jimmies. The teams directly beneath the Blazers have shuffled position continuously since Montreal overtook Rockville for sole position of the top spot on April 15. Pitching has been the saving grace for the Blazers, starting pitching to be more specific. They enter June with the second best team ERA and starter ERA and they have given up just 209 runs, tops in the Johnson League, in their first 54 games. Dani Garcia, who just signed a nice three year extension to stay in Montreal, and Juan Ruiz led the team in May. Garcia posted a 4-0 record to go with his 1.83 ERA while Ruiz went 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA. Both picked up the slack for the last Aprils' best pitcher Don Jaramillo who struggled in May posting a 5.67 ERA. After management and the coaching staff got on the same page, Carlton Casson is back saving games. It's too early to tell if the bullpen experiment with former starter and captain In-sung Yi is going to work out but with the excess of starting pitchers in the minors it looks as if the Blazers are in for the long haul on this one.

At the plate it looks as if C Joe Bradshaw is finally playing to his potential which couldn't have come at a better time as Ramiro Cheron has all but been removed from the platoon that he and Bradshaw were in due to his inability to make contact this year. Bradshaw is now the full time starter and he had a great May batting over .330 and slugging .578. He also slapped 16 extra base hits while driving in and scoring 12. CF Manoell Whanon won JL Player of the week on May 28 and then signed a six year, sixty million dollar contract extension. After a hot start, 3B Eduardo Gonzalez had a horrible month of May batting around 200 and slugging around .300. The Blazers will need him to regain his hitting stroke if they are to continue winning at the pace they currently are.
