Blazers Win First Five in August!
.....
.....
The Montreal Blazers celebrated their five game win streak to end July with a matching five game win streak to start August. The 10 game win streak was enough to push the Blazers from a fringe wildcard position to an Atlantic Division challenger. Despite an up and down second half of August, Montreal finished the month 20 games over .500 with a 77-57 record. Just four wins away from their predicted total. The month started with a three game sweep of division rival New Orleans where the good guys outscored the hometown Crawdads 32-14. "We rarely have any success against New Orleans." said Montreal GM Herb DeSpain during his weekly presser. "Especially not in New Orleans!"
Once again it was Montreal's starting pitching that lead the way. Don Jaramillo(3-1) led the starters with a 2.37 ERA while Dani Garcia(who was banished to the bullpen earlier in the year) finished at 3-0 with an ERA barely above three. Jaramillo had a 29 scoreless inning streak snapped on August 16th. Stopper Carlton Casson continued his spectacular season with an outstanding August earning eight saves in 13 appearances with a sub one ERA.
At the plate veteran infielder Angel Zalapa had his best month as a Blazer leading the team in doubles(9), homers(6), RBI(24), and slugging percentage(.573). Catcher Joe Bradshaw, who has struggled for two seasons with Montreal, has shown an upward trend in his offensive performance capped off with a .340 August batting average. Eduardo Gonzalez continues to impress. He's been hot all season after finishing 2044 with a flourish. He hit over .300 for August and led the team with 32 hits and 19 runs scored.
