longtime Blazer released 40.3

Post by handaspencer » Mon Oct 14, 2019 11:52 am

The Blazer organization has announced that Charles Martin has been released by the Blazers organization after spending his whole career in Montreal. He debuted in 2030 with the Blazers and for 6 seasons he was a very productive 1B for the Blazers. He had a career .314 avg, with over 1,200 hits and 75 triples with a career high of 16 triples in 2034 and had 364 SB in his career.

In 2036 he signed a 4 year 48 million dollar contract extension that haunted the Blazers organization for years. He earned 48 million dollars and gave the Blazers -1.8 WAR as a favor in return. His contract is up at the conclusion of the season and it was becoming more difficult for the Blazers to hide him as the 27th spot in the active roster when he was not actually spending time on waivers. The Blazers didn't have the financial flexibility to release him in previous seasons and had to ride out the contract. At this point in the season the Blazers only have to eat about 9 million which is no problem.

Words can not describe how much excitement that is brewing within the Blazers organization over the financial flexibility coming up. For the past 3 seasons the Blazers have been in a financial mess, but fortunately they was able to turn a profit each of those seasons. The Blazers will have close to 70 million dollars available to acquire actual baseball talent this offseason.

Usually when there is big team news the organization will release a press release and saying nice things about the player. Its very interesting that the Blazers organization has not made such a release with this decision. When asked for comment GM Spencer responded we have no comment! According to a source familiar with the situation some believe he took his money and ran and their was bitterness between the front office and Martin.

Curious to the reasoning to release him over just letting him walk at the end of the season. Yes, it still costs the same but...

It really came down to roster spot management. He only played in 7 games the whole season and simply was not needed. I ultimately decided to add another arm to the pen and felt like that would benefit me more at this point of the season.
