July Recap 1.8

Post by handaspencer » Mon May 06, 2019 10:44 am

June record 12-13
Team Avg .253
Team ERA. 5.23
Team WAR 15.25
Team RD-108
Team attendance -22.6%

After a cold start in April and May the Blazers has been a .500 team in June and July. For the month of July the team actually had a positive RD and things continue to improve as the season goes along. GM Spencer said I think when we traded so many of our guys in June the media felt like we was waiving the white flag and just calling this season a wash. We have proven we can play .500 ball during a good stretch of the season and there is a growing sense of optimism within the clubhouse that we can play .500 ball for the remainder of the season.

The month of July belonged to star rookie Kevin Mackeith. During July he earned JL player of the week, JL Batter of the month and JL rookie of the month. During an incredible 24 game stretch he batted .419 with 11 HR. Mackeith is on track to hit over .330 for the season with 34 HR and close to 100 RBI in less than 115 games this season. In a controversial decision GM Spencer sent him to AAA to open the season in order to gain the additional season in arbitration. He opened the season with 7 days of BBA service and didn't join the club until the end of April. I understand the frustration with my decision but we felt as an organization having him for an extra season and getting that 7th year of team control was more valuable than the month of April in 2038. We are not here to make popular decisions but the right decisions and we stand behind this decision.

The Blazers was able to get some SP help from a minor league signing in SP Matt Mills after he was released by the Los Vegas organization. He has gone 3-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 5 starts with the Blazers. The Blazers have been able to improve that back end of the rotation some including the addition of Jesus Lopez. We understand the staff needs to keep the game close and give the bats the opportunity to win some games for us. We are happy with the progress we have made in those areas but we understand we are still a bit away.

As the trade deadline approaches it appears the Blazers could be staying quiet. We have floated some names out there but nothing has really materialized to satisfy the direction we want to go. We like our young core at this time we want to build around them but obviously if the right offer came along we would take a hard look at it. There has been some rumblings in the media about the future of Manager Kayne Grandage. Its obvious this team is improving and he is absolutely making a case to bring him back. It will be exciting to see what this team does the final 2 months of the season.
