April showers in Montreal has not been a sign of May flowers but rather signs of a long storm coming. After an exciting opening week where the Blazers finished 3-3 and was highlighted by a bottom of the 9th HR to win the home opener it has been a disastrous season to date. The one big addition this offseason was bringing in Catcher Hank Brewer but he was lost early on for the season due to a broken knee cap and has left a huge hole behind the plate. Unfortunately very limited help is on the way. The club did just call up Kevin MacKeith who was held back a few weeks and started the season in AAA to gain the extra year of arbitration.
The 6 highest paid players on this team are making a combined 65.8 mill this season which is 62% of the teams payroll and have combined to contribute exactly 0 WAR among them. Due to this the Blazers are #30 in the league in cost efficiency measuring $/WAR and $/WIN. Despite all the negativity surrounding the Blazers Juan Santana is off to a blazing start hitting .375 with 6 HR and 27 RBI and among league leaders in many offensive categories. The only FA addition to the Blazers Roberto Lopez is leading the league in walks. Also the young Lopez brothers Jesus Lopez and Vicente Lopez have shown some promise early on in their careers.
Can it get worse in Montreal? It would really be hard to have a worse month than the Blazers just experienced but there is strong signs indicating this team is simply really bad. Losing is not something manager Kayne Grandage is accustomed to and no doubt its pushing him to the max. The one positive for the Blazers is having a veteran like Grandage at the helm who can lead with a steady hand. As this team pushes towards May the focus simply needs to be just get better every day and tomorrow will take care of itself.
