April showers in Montreal has not been a sign of May flowers but rather signs of a long storm coming. After an exciting opening week where the Blazers finished 3-3 and was highlighted by a bottom of the 9th HR to win the home opener it has been a disastrous season to date. The one big addition this offseason was bringing in Catcher Hank Brewer but he was lost early on for the season due to a broken knee cap and has left a huge hole behind the plate. Unfortunately very limited help is on the way. The club did just call up Kevin MacKeith who was held back a few weeks and started the season in AAA to gain the extra year of arbitration.
The 6 highest paid players on this team are making a combined 65.8 mill this season which is 62% of the teams payroll and have combined to contribute exactly 0 WAR among them. Due to this the Blazers are #30 in the league in cost efficiency measuring $/WAR and $/WIN. Despite all the negativity surrounding the Blazers Juan Santana is off to a blazing start hitting .375 with 6 HR and 27 RBI and among league leaders in many offensive categories. The only FA addition to the Blazers Roberto Lopez is leading the league in walks. Also the young Lopez brothers Jesus Lopez and Vicente Lopez have shown some promise early on in their careers.
Can it get worse in Montreal? It would really be hard to have a worse month than the Blazers just experienced but there is strong signs indicating this team is simply really bad. Losing is not something manager Kayne Grandage is accustomed to and no doubt its pushing him to the max. The one positive for the Blazers is having a veteran like Grandage at the helm who can lead with a steady hand. As this team pushes towards May the focus simply needs to be just get better every day and tomorrow will take care of itself.

Unless you're just loaded, losing a superstar is always a kick to the gut.
Acutully, it's a kick to the gut no matter what.

Santana was my first ever draft pick and (along with aki kondo), the headliners of the gillstrom deal. Glad to see him doing well.

Re: April Recap 1.4
I moved him to his natural position this year. He played CF last year and his horrendous ZR crushed his WAR. He is definitely not a strong corner defender but hopefully getting him away from CF allowed him to settle in at the plate. I also turned his aggressiveness up on the bases to maximize his ability. Definitely a positive in a tough season so far.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Wed Apr 03, 2019 3:15 pmSantana was my first ever draft pick and (along with aki kondo), the headliners of the gillstrom deal. Re: April Recap 1.4
Santana should be respectable in the field. Not great, but okay. He's young, so you hope the range might be on the upper end of that band.
But the kid should rake, regardless.

Figured service time was the reason for MacKeith to be in AAA- I think he'll be a great player for you!

Re: April Recap 1.4
For some reason he had 7 days of service from last year. I don't know the exact date to get the extra year but with the 7 days he already had the end of April seemed about right. Hopefully this decision benefits me later.

Re: April Recap 1.4
ya there is no way Santana can play center, but he should be respectable in the corners.

Re: April Recap 1.4
I know everyone has personal strategies and many different strategies will work. But I like teams that are strong defensively up the middle and I am more willing to sacrifice on certain corners within reason. Although we are not even close to where we want to be as a team we have improved some this year defensively and that was one of my goals for this season.usnspecialist wrote: ↑Wed Apr 03, 2019 11:10 pmya there is no way Santana can play center, but he should be respectable in the corners.
Although I can't provide proof Santana had a down year last year offensively due to defensive issues, and "I don't know if the game even works that way". But if you compare his 2035, 2036 and this season "small sample size" vs 2037 I really believe being asked to play out of position affected him mentally with the bat and caused him to underperform.
