Montreal 2037 Offseason report 1.0

Post by handaspencer » Tue Mar 05, 2019 1:49 pm

On the eve of FA filings GM Spencer has made his first major move with the Blazers. With a big hole at the catcher position the Blazers have acquired future hall of famer Hank Brewer. In addition RF Jose Olivarez was acquired along with a couple prospects. The Blazers sent Omaha RF Alonso Olivere and AAA C Dan Clapper to complete the deal.
This move does confirm rumors that talks have broken down between Mark Dempsey and Luis Ortega and they appear destined for FA. Sources with knowledge of the situation indicated GM Spencer was reluctant to agree to the number of years both guys demanded from the Blazers. This moves also confirms fears within the front office that losing two high profile guys to FA, could have a major impact on the fan base and ticket sales. Bringing a guy like Brewer in should help offset those loses and stabilize the fan base. This move has some short term benefits, helps balance out the roster better and could also potentially have some long term benefits.
Brewer is coming off his worst season in several seasons but the Blazers are hopeful he can rebound. Brewer does have a player option after the 2038 season and he could opt out and seek a final long term contract. If he meets the WAR requirements the Blazers would be in line for a compensation pick for his loss. This move also clears the way for RF Kevin Mackeith in AAA who is likely to debut this season with the Blazers which made Alonso Olivere expendable. The Blazers loved Olivere but wanted to bring in Jose Oliverez who is a righty can platoon with Mackeith as he breaks into the league.
With Montreal’s payroll being around 95 mill after this move it’s hard to think Montreal will be that active as FA opens tonight and adding Brewer and Oliverez could be their major moves. Montreal ranked #24 last season in $/Win and recognize this needs improved. Unless they can clear some contracts being active in FA don't appear likely.
