GM press conference

Post by handaspencer » Wed Feb 20, 2019 12:11 pm

GM Spencer: Good morning everyone I would like to thank owner John Percolo for giving me this opportunity and especially my family for believing in me and pushing me to pursue my dreams. I would also like to thank the Baghdad Kings in the UMEBA for giving me an opportunity to prove myself and allow me to be in this position. I do have one major exciting announcement before I open the floor up for questions. We have agreed to extend our Manager Kayne Grandage for an additional 4 seasons. In my opinion Kayne is one of the best managers in this association and has done nothing but win during his career. During his tenure in Montreal he has made the playoffs 9 times and he has won a 1,000 games in his career. Once accepting this position my 1st phone call was to Kayne and I told him I want to keep you. As a young gm I want to surround myself with smart people who know how to win. I will open it up for questions at this time.

Reporter: Montreal has made the postseason 9 of the past 11 seasons, what is your short term goals with Montreal?

GM Spencer: Every season our goal is to make the postseason. We are coming off our worst season in over 10 season and obviously that is not acceptable. I believe we are better than this and I will be honest, I am not sure I have a clear picture of how good we can be. For example defensively we were at the bottom of the league last season and it was not even close. Also we gave up the 2nd most runs in the league last season as a pitching staff, but there is data that indicates we could have been a pitching staff ranked 10-15 in the league. Fixing our defense will be priority #1 going into next season which will help me understand what kind of staff we really have. I think by the All Star break we should have a pretty good idea if we are a playoff team or need to look long term instead. Ownership has asked us to trim salary some and when your down in revenue these decisions need made to remain profitable as an organization, so I support that decision and will work to maximize the money we spend. There could be a few financial driven moves in the forecast to meet next years payroll reduction.

Reporter: How would you describe your gm style?

GM Spencer: I like to think of myself as having an open mind as a gm. I want to create my own competitive advantage against others and if that means hitting more HR than others, stealing more bases or by pitching and defense we will do it. I believe any of those styles can be successful in building a champion. I tend to favor pitching and defense, but we will play to the talent on this team. I believe in building through the draft and supplementing through trades and FA and depending upon the situation the organization is at will decide the level of aggressiveness in those areas. There could be certain seasons we get super aggressive in FA or trade prized prospects to help us win it all. We might also have some seasons when its in our best interest to lack aggressiveness. I like to avoid being predictable and I like to monitor the market to help determine the best path for each season.

Reporter: What is your opinion of the active roster and your farm?

GM Spencer: I really like some of our guys on the active roster but I do think we need to find ways to supplement them. I would like to shore up a few positions that I highly value and we will be looking at trades or FA for those positions. We will be making some lineup changes, focusing on platoons to help stimulate the lineup and implementing pitch counts and getting creative in the bullpen. I really like some of the prospects in our system but once again feel like we need more depth on the farm. We will be focused on proper development and promote when the players are truly ready.

At 70, you have to wonder how long Grandage can hold on.
