The Montreal Minute(49:2): Halfway Home

Post by HerbD » Fri Jan 07, 2022 2:04 pm

Just a few games over the halfway mark of the 2049 season and the Montreal Blazers are four games under .500 and just 5.5 games out of a playoff spot. The season has been up and down for the squad with highs and lows in each area of the team. Playing in the Atlantic is tough as their 41-45 record would place them fourth in the Frontier.

The most consistent bat on the team is veteran, third baseman Eduardo Gonzalez. In his ninth year with the Blazers Gonzalez is on pace for a career high 6.4 WAR and his sixth 100 RBI campaign. He's been helped on offense this year by Rodriguez boys. Juan, from Houston Texas, is hitting over .320 and on pace for over 80 RBI playing RF against RHP. Jose, from Guatemala, is also hitting over .320 and on pace for over 40 RBI platooning at second base against LHP. Catcher Joe Bradshaw is putting up hit typical 3~4 WAR season as the main backstop on the team. DH Cory Skinner has hit over .300 for the entire season drawing more walks than strikeouts and posting an OBP near .380. Everyone else on the team has struggled at the plate including veteran SS Orlando Lopez(.214 BA) and rookies Fuad Demirel(.174) and Stan Seymour(.214).

On the mound the results are pretty much the same. Some guys are excelling but others are not playing well at all. Rookie Cheslav Evgrafov has done well to start his career posting a 3.23 ERA in 10 starts. Fellow rookies Adam Pilgrim(5.53 ERA) and Giomar Meregalli(7.64 ERA) have not been as successful. Veterans Don Jaramillo(4.12 ERA) and Arsenio Lambrinos(4.93 ERA) have disappointed while another verteran, Hideaki Shibutani(3.41 ERA), has been impressive in the rotation.

Finishing above .500 and squeaking into the playoffs are still obtainable goals but the veterans on this team, both at the plate and on the mound, will need to play better the second half of the season.
