Wise Kraken 7.1: Kraken acquire prospects

Post by aaronweiner » Thu Nov 14, 2013 6:53 pm

Most teams in the MBWBA don't need cash. They've got quite enough, thanks; the high payroll teams have playoff money and the low payroll teams get broadcasting money. But a few teams fall through the cracks, and when Omaha did, Carolina was happy to bail them out. Carolina acquired three prospects from Omaha for $12.5 million cash, a deal that should benefit both sides.

"We've expanded the depth and breadth of our farm with this move, and we're very happy," said GM Aaron Weiner. "This is a good move for us."

None of the prospects acquired are in the top 100 lists or are likely to be, but all of them have some promise as future relief pitchers. The Kraken basically traded the money saved by the Waichirou Moronobu retirement, but couldn't have possibly traded Moronobu for three prospects. Since the Kraken acquired a prospect in the Moronobu deal, too, one could say that they picked up four prospects by dealing for Moronobu.

"We like all three of these pitchers and will be watching them closely," said Weiner. "Any time you can improve the depth of your farm, you do it."
