The Bullwhip - 1997.2 - Sharpe Traded to Seattle

Post by DoubleB » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:38 am

The Record
November 17th, 1997
Hackensack, New Jersey
*******************************

Despite hitting 20 home runs in the regular season and 4 in the playoffs, 1B Alistar Sharpe of the Hackensack Bulls has been traded to Seattle in exchange for C Pablo Aroaujo and utility man Dan Druff, a clear salary dump and follow up to the recent acquisition of 1B Stan Ross by the Bulls. Sharpe, still just 28, is scheduled to make $6.82 Million over the next two seasons, a price the Bulls were known to detest for a .295 on base percentage in 565 at bats last season. While Sharpe's defense will be missed at 1B, the newly acquired Ross comes close to matching Sharpe's prowess at 1B and should provide more consistent offense at a third of the cost.

Druff, 27, could very well find himself in Hackensack for Opening Day, based largely on his versatility. Accomplished at 2B, 3B, LF and RF, the switch hitting Druff has enough offensive ability to be a valuable utility man for the Bulls. Aroaujo, 22, will likley get a chance to compete for the Bulls backup catcher role against Vic Loucks, with Aroaujo the clear winner with on defense and catching ability.

I like Druff (and that kind of supersub on the bench). He's like a better version of my Chaffee. Nice deal.

Druff's a great guy to have. I'm hoping my version in AA (SS James Dicus) can develop. Those type of guys are so valuable.

I was hoping to use Isaac Douglas in that role this year until you and your deep pockets stole him away from me :P

Um ... I paid less than $3 million per for him. I wouldn't call that "deep pockets." Ha. Plus, it's payback for Tyler Ryan.

lol. I know, but it still was like twice what I was offering him. And in that case, that's payback I'll accept. I think Ryan will help me more than Douglas would have.

Seattle clearly got the best player in the deal... this was a salary dump for me.

That's about $35 Million in payroll shed since taking over Hackensack... and while it cost me some youth to grease the wheels on Menne Jr. the team is actually better on the field.
