The Bullwhip - 1996.5 - Bulls Acquire Catcher Wong

The Record
August 1st, 1996
Hackensack, New Jersey
*******************************

For the first half the season, the Hackensack Bulls rolled out a lineup with a cement footed right fielder anchoring the defense behind the plate and calling games for the best pitching staff in the Frick League. Wilbur Cohen posted a zone rating of -7.4 and a defensive efficiency of .880... staggeringly bad numbers. How the Bulls managed to give up the fewest runs in the league with Cohen behind the plate is a head scratcher... an obvious testament to pitching coach Lorenzo Carbajal and the whole pitching staff. But today, GM Brian Boulton took another step in solidifying a hodge podge lineup with the acquisition of 31 year old catcher Sterling Wong from Des Moines in exchange for 18 year old pitcher Kim Rodas.

Wong, traded to Des Moines from Phoenix just a month ago, is hitting .303 with a .358 OBP and .841 OPS between Des Moines and Phoenix this year. More importantly for the Bulls is the fact that Wong is a strong defensive catcher and has caught 930 games at the professional level over 10 seasons. Wilbur Cohen can settle in as a pinch hitter now.

"We're getting there," said manager Antonio Gonzalez. "It's important for players to play in spots where they are comfortable. This isn't a rotisserie league."

You went to find another catcher!?

But that guy you have behind the plate is such a stud defender at so many positions. :)
