1995.05 - Pitcher of the Year

Post by mrbornac » Mon Jun 14, 2010 9:14 pm

Now this award had some more competition. Should it be given to the Gunga Oogalagunga Award winner, the best closer in the Frick, or to one of the fabulous starters, 3 of whom amassed 19 wins, and 1 of them got up to 22.

John Ross Riles, Jr. looks to be a lock to win the Steve Nebraska Golden Arm Award for the year, but he had the highest (although not by that much) ERA of the 4 main starters.

Williamson Prushnok had the best WHIP, lowest ERA, but also tied for the most losses, a fluky 9 with Riles.

Ron Burgundy could win the award, with only 4 losses in 35 starts, and nearly the lowest ERA of the group.

And then, there is Damario Poso, who closed games as well as anyone in the league this past season, not only leading the league in saves with 41, but also piling up 10 wins in relief.

In the end, it has to go to Riles. Not only did he lead the league in wins (21), but his 295 Ks were good enough for 3rd in the league. Way to go Junior, you are proving that even at the age of 34, you can still throw it as well as anyone since the namesake of the award you will be given by the league.

Riles won it but he really shouldnt have. Prushnok was a better candidate on his own team, and Harris' BB/K ratio was just stupidly good.

I am ok with Riles winning it, but I agree, there was a good case for all three.

Not to mention Izatt, and to some extent Burgundy.
