Sticking Points 2056.6: Dooley Out, Cataraza In

Post by JimSlade » Mon Oct 30, 2023 11:57 pm

After 13 seasons, the Rockville Pikemen parted ways with manager Denny Dooley, who led the team to multiple playoff appearances and a 993-948 record. Francisco Cataraza was installed at the helm for the final 3 games of the Pikemen's season, yet another sub-.500 (78-84) campaign, landing the team in 5th place in the Johnson League Atlantic Division.

In a brief statement on social media, Dooley thanked the organization, his players, and the Rockville fans."It was tough trying to rebuild," said Dooley, "but there wasn't a day where we weren't fighting our butts off to get back to the postseason." The usually reserved Dooley thanked fans on a billboard along Rte 355.

After a sluggish start to the season, the Pikemen showed signs of life, going 30-20 in the last 2 months. "The guys were scratching and clawing to get to .500," said GM Jim Slade to the assembled media, "but even if we got there, it was time for a change."

Slade would not provide specifics, but it was long rumored that Dooley and his pitching staff did not see eye to eye. Around the league, free agent pitchers were reluctant to talk to the Pikemen. Rockville players did not offer much beside well wishes for their former manager, but veteran Danny Leach said the pitching staff needed to take accountability. "Denny gave us the ball every 5th or 6th day. I never found him to be a distraction."

Slade promised to discuss Cataraza, a former pitcher, and the plan for the offseason in the coming week. "Right now," he explained, "we need a few days to settle in and catxh up with our families. Francisco will sit down with you all.'

"We've extended a couple of our young players," he continued, referring to first baseman Cam Whitten and reliever David Wade, "and we'll be looking to be active this offseason."

Catazara looks like a great candidate for Rockville's next long-term manager
