Sticking Points 2051.6: Leftovers/unders?

Post by JimSlade » Mon Jun 13, 2022 12:15 pm

How many lefthanded line drive hitters will it take the overcome the mediocre starting pitching of the Rockville Pikemen? With the recent acquisition of former Yellow Springs Nine centerfielder Arvin Duggan, the team hopes to get one step closer to answering that question.

The fleet-footed, power-hitting Duggan was on the free-agent market longer than he might have expected. Few saw this signing coming, as veteran Xavier Rangel, picked up in a trade with Edmonton this offseason, has been off to a solid start. "You can't have enough bats, especially athletic ones," explained Pikemen GM Jim Slade, as Duggan's introductory press conference.

"I'm just focused on fitting in and contributing," added Duggan. "There are plenty of at-bats to go around when your team can turn over the lineup." A handful of teammates, including Rangel nodded from the back of the room.

The one blue note with this addition is the subtraction from the Rockville roster of centerfielder Domingo Mendez, who had gotten off to a blazing start backing up Rangel. Mendez is reporting to AAA Dodge City, where he'll get regular playing time and bide possible new opportunities with an organization not so rich in centerfielders.

An odd side note in Dodge City is centerfielder Chuck Dickens opting out of his split contract at the 30-day mark, while he was still on the IL. Dickens was a favorite of Slade's from his spell as GM of the Mumbai franchise in the old UMEBA. It will be interesting to see where the talented, but injury-prone outfielder lands.

Pikemen pitching, meanwhile, needs all the run support it can get. Jafar Haamid had been getting knocked around until his latest start. After a torrid start, youngster Nasir al Din bin Sahir has come down to earth. Maybe the team needs more lefty starters to go with Matt McCartney.

When asked to describe his tenure with Rockville, Dickens said simply, 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.'
