Sticking Points 2050.5: "Let's Do This!"

Post by JimSlade » Tue May 03, 2022 6:12 am

"Let's do this!" exclaimed Rockville Pikemen SS and spiritual center Chip Puckett, as the Pikemen took down the Brooklyn Robins to stay within 3.5 games of the Johnson League Atlantic Division lead and take a step closer to a wildcard spot.

Pikemen veterans like Puckett and starting pitcher Ray Verhoeve, who's hit a rough patch, have been rallying teammates who survived GM Jim Slade's efforts to compete and rebuild, as the trade deadline passed.

"We know the front office was trying to do what was necessary to get under the cap and remain competitive for next season," said Verhoeve, "but we've got this season to play for. We're a contender!"

Lefty starter Alan Gray has been model of consistency in the Pikemen's unconventional 6-man rotation, and other younger players called into the mix in the back half of the season have been doing their part, like Kenny Blackwell, who has been splitting time at first and third base, and starting pitcher Nasir al Din bin Sahir, who was acquired in the Daniel Pepper deal at the start of Slade's tenure as GM.

"We know why we're here, how we fit," says Blackwell, who may replace popular third baseman Mike Galloway, if the team can't find a way to balance his coming arbitration hit. "The goal is to win this thing. The front office can worry about the future in November."
