Sticking Points 2049.2: Many Long-Time Pikemen Declined Arbitration

Rockville isn't so close to the cap that they have to shed talent this year, but they're choosing to go a different direction with a number of positions. Several organizational players haven't worked out the way the team hoped, and instead of keeping them around to see what happens next, they've cut a number of players from the roster, while adding some to the 40 man.

"Every position counts, and we're trying to do the best we can with all of our players," said Rockville GM Aaron Weiner. "We're looking to make a few changes in a few places."

The biggest surprise cut is first baseman Colin Lee, who did an admirable job this year filling in for oft-injured first baseman Bing-de Zhao. Lee had a reputation for being injury prone and has a difficult personality, but has largely stayed off the DL with the team and has produced.

"We're calling Danny Adkins up from the minors and he'll be filling the Zhao insurance role next year," said Weiner. "Danny was one of the best hitters in AAA last year, and there's a likely $3 million difference between the two players. Colin's been very good for us, but we're looking to make some changes."

Also cut from the roster is former 15-game winner and swingman Guy Shroyer, in another slight surprise. Scouts say Shroyer's effectiveness had been waning and he didn't look as comfortable on the mound as he did in his 2047 season.

"We're giving Guy a chance to go be someone else's Guy," Weiner joked. "But, seriously, he's a good pitcher; we weren't sure we'd have the roster spot for him and he was out of options, so we wish him well."

Also cut from the roster will be Chip Puckett's backup, Pablo Ochoa. Ochoa hasn't lived up to the promise he showed in 2045 and 2046 and was reportedly troubled by the Pikemen acquiring Puckett, who has been one of the best shortstops in baseball while in Rockville. Dave Richards, Mike Galloway's backup, is also on the chopping block; he hadn't been effective. Brian Best, Manuel Moreno's backup, is also out; he couldn't find the baseball over the last two months.

"We're looking to try to fill Pablo and Dave's role with one guy, and we have a few million dollars to get there," said Weiner. "Hopefully there's a guy out there that fits. And we're looking to try out Bradley Oglethorpe as Manuel's backup."

Grant Lee will also be a free agent, which means there will be quite a new faces for the Pikemen this year.
